Interview with French Fashion Stylist Ambre Saravelli

Lovely to have you here, Ambre. Tell your story, how did you discover the love for fashion and how did you decide you wanted to be a fashion stylist? I am a French fashion stylist based in the South of France and I did a fashion school in Marseille where I am living. My grandmother Élise was a very good seamstress and my mother Sylvie is passionate about fashion and decoration, thanks to both of them for what I do.

If you could explain your work to the world, how would you describe it? I am responsible for sourcing garments and accessories for a photoshoot. If you want to work behind the scenes for brands or magazines, all you have to do is become an editorial stylist.

Can you tell us a little bit about what usually goes into your position as a fashion stylist? I create the different looks for a shoot in order to capture the brief, to find the perfect image communication for the brand, the designer, the magazine etc. You have also to work with a great team, the photographer, the make up artist (MUA), and the model. The DA is very important too, because he or she tells you about the creative direction to take.

What do you find the most rewarding in your job? Escape from our daily routines. I work on different projects, meet new people, new team, new places and locations.

What would be your advice for people who want to be just like you..? “Making work pay”. We need a little bit of luck as well, always.

Could you tell us about something completely extravagant you have had to do for your job? I had to find a dog, a Dalmatian most specifically. 4 days before the shoot.

And we finally made it.

What fuels your imagination and provides you with inspiration? The people, my cities Aix en Provence and Marseille, my mom, the 70s, the 80s, the 90s, and the Provence. Also French, and Italian culture. Most specifically the Mediterranean culture. I was born in Marseille, and I have Italian and Corsican origins, so here it is.

You are about getting your hands on the best fashion for a photoshoot. What captures your attention when looking for outfits and accessories? When you are doing a photoshoot you are creating quite an atmosphere so I am looking for a certain type of clothes or accessories that reflect the perfect image of what I want. It could be a color, a fabric.

Everyone loves a good deal, what are some of your favorite places to find budget clothes and accessories? A flea market actually based in Aix en Provence near to Marseille, you can find perfect pieces of clothes or accessories with a good price.

Do you have any fashion rules when putting an outfit together? I don’t have any fashion rules. But I love when it’s minimalist.

What are your thoughts about sustainable and eco-friendly fashion? Have you ever worked with a sustainable fashion brand? In an ideal world, everything in fashion should be sustainable. I think that, in 2019 you can love fashion and became eco-friendly.

I did not work with a sustainable fashion brand but I would love to work with some of them, like Maggie Marilyn, she did perfect suits, and Whimsy + Row for the dresses.

SVNR for the jewelry.

Do you remember your very first job as a fashion stylist? How did it go? It was for American Vintage, I was an assistant and it was for the autumn/winter 2016 campaign. It was tiring but awesome. I discovered a new job, new people, the DA, the stylist, the production company, the MUA etc., and I was thinking “ok that’s exactly what I want to do, be at the heart of it all”.

What are the key pieces every woman should have in their wardrobe for summer 2019? Some headbands (Dior’s elasticated ballet hairbands are my favorite), a belt bag, an XXL bag, some beige clothes, biker boots, white boots (Squared-toe trend is the best one), a suit and a good jungle print.

What are your 3 favorite pieces in your closet that you cannot live without? A mini vintage Céline bag, a black suit and a pair of heel boot.

What was your last fashion purchase and what is still on your wish list? My last fashion purchase was a Mango dress for this summer, I love their collection. And what is still on my wish list? So many things… but I would like to buy a thousand vintages bags, a Chanel vintage belt bag, all the clothes from the Row, you know the brand of Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen. My favourite brand with Céline (the old one).

Is there any style or fashion icon you lookup and adore? Monica Bellucci and Claudia Cardinale. I love them because I love that kind of beauty, natural, Italian, Mediterranean.

If you could travel back in time to one fashion era, where would you go? What do you like about that period? If I could travel back I would go to the 60s for the vintage and chic fashion details. Also for the home decoration. All my apartment is about the 60s.

Where can our readers keep up with your work and get connected with you? I have a portfolio online www.ambresaravelli.wixsite.com/ambresaravelli

Describe a perfect day of Ambre Saravelli. Waking up early, going to Aix en Provence, the old town is very charming with its flower market, its fruit and vegetable market. Then, a sunny lunch with all my family at my parents house in Aix en Provence, then go shopping, reading a book with a coffee, driving on the “Corniche” in Marseille to appreciate the sea, and then having an aperitif for while watching the beautiful sunset.

What was the most courageous thing you have ever done in your life? Leave my job to start freelancing. But it was not really “courageous” because my parents, my family and my friends encouraged me a lot.

If you could say something to everyone on the planet, what would it be? “Be the type of person that you want to meet.” and also another quote that I love: “In a world where you can be anything, be kind, always.”

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why? If I could go anywhere I think I will probably go around the world in order to meet different cultures, different people, embrace the beauty of everyone. But at the end, I think I would come back home, where I feel good. I love to leave for a trip but I prefer even more to come back home.

Tell one surprising fact about yourself. I have a qualification to fly a glider. It was an option in my high school and I received the Master Degree. So… if you want to take a ride…

Thank you, Ambre.
