Darina, where are you based and what brought you to photography world? I am based in Czech Republic, in Brno. I was photographing since my childhood, it was fun for me to photograph my friends and family in different roles, it made me happy.
What fascinates and motivates you most in photography? I like to create another reality, to work and communicate with my models, shaping my view on what I see just now and having possibility to change it, to make it a little bit different.
How would you describe your photographic style? What do you enjoy most photographing? I love some kind of staged photography or sometimes it is called art photography. Not only fashion or portrait, but “something” inspired by story or hidden narration.
Do you think that a person must possess talent to capture emotion and expression in a picture? I think good photographer is half talented person and half hard working person. You need to see very quickly, at the moment, what´s going on, to analyse in a few seconds and press shutter, doesn´t matter if it is portrait or documentary. That´s one half, in this case, talent matters. The second half is hard work, studying, thinking about what to photograph or how to create a scene. Photographing starts with thinking, not capturing the moment.
In your opinion, what makes photography an art? Feeling of something divine, when you look at it.
Do you think that society would be different if photography was never invented? Not really, our natural creativity, what every human kind has inside, would find or use another way how to present itself.
Where do your ideas to shoot come from? Who or what inspires you? Life observation, I read a lot, study a lot art, watching films or theatre plays, I am interested in fashion, going to flee markets… I am trying to not be inspired by photographers, but I love photos by Guy Bourdin or Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott.
Is there something you always ask yourself/think just before you press the shutter button? Not really, I tried to be absolutely concentrated on the object of photographing. It is my zen exercise :), I talk to my models but I have some kind of parallel thinking, trying to be empty inside.
What would be your dream shoot? I would like to make some photographs in Tokyo. I hope it happens one day.
What shoot are you especially proud of? I am proud of one photo cycle of Icelandic Fairy Tales, what I created when I lived there for a while. It was really hard work but I met a lot of interesting people there. I am so grateful for this experience.
What’s your favorite light source, and why do you choose it? Natural, I like purity and simplicity in some way.
What are your future goals in general? Not to be only a good photographer, but also a good teacher. I am teaching photography in many levels – secondary school, adults, seniors. I hope I can lead people to see the reality in a different way.
To your opinion, what role image editing programs play in today’s photography? What are advantages and disadvantages of using it? It is a tool, which can give you freedom, you don´t have to be stressed with technical quality of photography so much. But like with every tool, you should think very carefully, when and how to use it.
What has been some of the best advice given to you by another photographer/professional? Work hard and don´t be manipulated by your ego.
Where can we hear more from you or see more of your work?
