An Intro To Photo Mounting for Photographers

When it comes to properly mounting photos, it’s not something that is on a lot of photographers’ radars. However, proper mounting techniques are a skill that both amateur and professional photographers can and should grasp for obvious reasons.

For amateurs, it’s particularly important to be learn new things as you go and experiment with failure. It’s true that in some cases, the passion that an amateur photographer has for their hobby may eclipse the enthusiasm of a professional.

However, since amateurs don’t have the same experience and their skills are lacking, they tend to hit or miss when it comes to capturing “that perfect” photo.

Because of this, they may be looking for a way to showcase and protect the best photos that they capture. They may want to include these pictures in their portfolio or display them in some way either at home or at work.

One of the best ways to preserve photos is with proper mounting. Now it may sounds complicated but below are some terms and specific product types that photographers need to know before attempting to mount any photos.

Preserving The Quality of Your Photographs With Mounting Supplies

If you’re searching for a present for someone that loves photography, you may want to consider custom photo mat and mounting board or picture mounting boards. These are an excellent way to preserve and display photos. They can protect photos and keep them safe from damage for a long time.

Categories of Mount Board

Generally, photo and picture mount boards fall into two categories. There are boards made from a solid foam core and boards comprised of solid wood.

Wood Boards

Wood boards are more resilient but aren’t as resistant to moisture. If a photographer wants to make sure their photos are protected against moisture, they’ll need to wrap their photo board up in sheets of clear plastic.

This will keep the photos visible while protecting against moisture. With that said, you’ll want to replace the sheets from time to time. This can be a little bit of a problem.

Foam Core Mount Board

If you choose a foam core board, it’ll do more to resist moisture while still being very durable. A downside is that it can easily be bent. This shouldn’t damage the board itself, but it could leave marks on your photos which obviously is one of the last things you’d want.

Because of this, when the foam board is mounted, you’ll want to make sure there’s a hard surface beneath it. If you choose to buy a foam board, you’ll want to make sure the board you purchase are 3″ to 4″ thick.

This will make your board more resilient, and it will reduce the risk of bending.

You can find both adhesive and standard boards. The difference between these two types of boards is explained in the name. Since adhesive boards will already have adhesive on them, artists will be able to attach their photos to the board directly.

If you elect to go with the standard boards, you’ll need to look into a proper adhesive spray.
