Home Dog Training – Tips and Tricks to Manage Your Dog’s Behaviour

If there was ever open voting about “Who loves dogs,” more than 95% of individuals would vote in favour of them. Isn’t that? That’s how adorable and precious they are. And who cannot love those sloppy kisses, wagging tails, soulful stares, or that nose-nudge?

Well! Nobody denies that for sure! But what about when your beloved pooch starts jumping as if they have springs on their feet? No one can permit this behaviour. While we might not be able to resist their cute charms, dog training or management is the first step to prevent any disaster in the future.

But how to get started? Let’s find out!

Dog Training – What is it You Must do?

First things first, you must start with potty training, or else you’ll find yourself doing an additional chore. You can start by restricting the movement of your dog to different parts of your house. Doing so will help your dog get an idea about the areas accessible for doing the task.

Interestingly, dogs develop habits. So, if you start feeding your dog along with timely walks and outside potty breaks, it will condition them so much that they will come to you at the set time every day.

Having said that, never punish your dog in case they happen to do it inside the house. Clean the mess and be patient to reinforce this habit positively. And make sure to reward your dog whenever they go to the said spot.

Once this is covered, the next thing is to train your dog with different commands to avoid them creating any nuisance whenever someone arrives (or during walks).

Dog Commands – How to Manage Your Dog’s Behavior?

Coming to the basic commands that will help you avoid any potentially dangerous situations, include “come, stay, leave it, sit, lay down, or settle.” Let’s understand each of them one by one.

  • Come – In this command, you need to make different situations for your dog and ask him/her to come running when called for. This is also referred to as “recall training” as they will use these practice situations as an example if they happen to be in a similar situation. For instance, create a scary moment and call them towards you. You can start by unleashing your dog in a quiet area and ask them to “come.”

You can use dog treats, such as Everest Dog chews, to encourage them to head your way. Gradually increase the distance and start including different situations to let them come to you.

  • Stay – This command is also used to protect your dog from any harmful situation. Use three D’s of training, such as distance, duration, and distraction, to help your dog develop this habit.

For instance, you can start by being close to your dog and ask your furball to stay. Give him/her a treat on completion of the task. Now increase the distance and duration before you release the hand and start including distractions to test whether it’s working or not!

  • Leave it – This is yet another essential part of a dog’s life. It’s because dogs often pick up or swallow things lying down. However, not everything can be good for their health. So, start by showing your dog some treats to leave the other item down. And continue this until he/she finally gives up on the item.
  • Sit – This is usually the first command dogs learn. To start with this command, you need to use a treat in front of your dog and raise it slowly towards the back of the head. While following the treat, the butt will automatically go down. Once you achieve that, say “yes,” and reward him/her with a treat.

Continue doing this and transform from treats to a hand signal or a verbal command. Just connect this with their behaviour, and the pooch will make it a habit.

  • Lay Down – In this command, you need to use the treats to lure your dog to get used to this command initially. All you need to do is “be patient.” But don’t forget to say “yes” when he/she lies down and gives him/her treats. And do it repeatedly until your dog starts understanding this command.
  • Settle – This is quite a helpful command, especially to calm down your anxious dog. All you have to do is make your dog understand how to respond when there is no room to go anywhere. The idea is to make them settle down without adding any mental stress.

It is quite evident that no matter what command you use, you’ll need to take the help of the dog treats to manage your dog’s behaviour.

But how to use one?

Well! You can start with lower-ranked treats as a reward for simple exercises that they have already learned, especially if there were distractions involved. Not only that, you can use the same treats to put a stop to their household items chewing problems. Further, you can use it as a part of your dog’s mental stimulation or entertainment routine.

And as you can see, they are an invaluable part of the training sessions. It’s because dogs get motivated seeing food. So, it becomes an even more important addition when it comes to managing your dog’s behaviour.

Wrapping up

Having a dog by your side is an amazing thing. But if you can’t keep an eye on your dog’s behaviour, it would be a nuisance for everyone around. So, next time your dog jumps on you or someone, make sure not to give any attention. You need to teach them good and bad behaviours so that they develop a habit from early on.

Just focus on being consistent and make sure everyone follows the training pattern all the time. Make sure you show him/her love and care but also make them understand why doing certain things is not suitable. Train them properly to enjoy a peaceful and happy life with your pooch all the time.

Just be consistent in your efforts, and everything will be fine!
