Some Effective Practices to Save Water

Water is known to be the stuff that gives life. The presence of water on a planet marks the possibility of life to exist. We are lucky to have such an enormous source of water on this planet but not all of it is fit for us to drink. The oceans, that cover the majority area of the earth, contain saltwater that is unfit for human consumption. The freshwater resources, though large in size too, are quickly shrinking in size. We are using water much faster than nature can reimburse it. We need to think of our children and future generations who will face water scarcity and will have to go through a tough life which would be much less luxurious and easy as ours. A lot of our practices use freshwater where alternate methods can be used which don’t involve wasting precious freshwater. Simply tweaking some of these activities to save water can ensure the preservation of freshwater. Let’s look at some small changes that can result in the conservation of large quantities of water.

how to save water

Changes in Some Household Practices

Almost every household activity involves using water. We obviously can’t stop using water for all the activities but we can make small changes to these practices to save some water. A lot of these changes are very easy and don’t require a lot of deviation from how we have been doing things.

Grooming

We usually leave the tap open while washing our hands or brushing our teeth. We also let the water run while having a bath and shaving our beard. It won’t take any effort to simply close the tap while performing these activities and only open it when we actually need to use the water. Doing so can save a lot of water.

Washing Machine

It’s okay to confess that we sometimes use the washing machine when it has only 2-3 clothing articles in it. Some washing machines use the same amount of water to wash those clothes as they would when the load is full. So all we have to do is to run the machine only when we have a full load in it. This would mean that the machine is doing fewer rounds of laundry and automatically using lesser water.

Cleaning the House and Car

Cleaning the driveway or washing our car uses quite a lot of water when we use a hose to do it. We don’t sometimes realize that a hose dispenses a lot of water over time. Using a bucket and a mug to wash our car or driveway can save a lot of water. Also, we don’t need to do this every day. Take a few days off in between and wash them only when required.

Check for Leaks

Things in our houses experience wear and tear. Metal pipes corrode, tanks get holes, taps start leaking and other things happen that can start wasting water. We need to be vigilant and we should simply check for leakages in and around the house every once in a while. Upon finding a leakage we can call a plumber or we can simply fix the leak ourselves using some glues and seals that we can get from a utility shop.

Changing Agricultural and Aquaculture Practices

Research shows that the agriculture industry uses the maximum percentage of water among all the other industries and practices. Irrigation is necessary to grow healthy crops. We have developed some amazing irrigation techniques that greatly decrease the wastage of water and automatically increase the efficiency of water usage. The same goes for aquaculture. The breeding of fish and other aquatic creatures also uses a considerable amount of water. Techniques have been developed to minimize the wastage of water in these industries.

Though it is not enough. The amount of water being allocated to these industries is still a lot and could be the leading cause of water scarcity. Of course, we can not reduce the amount of food being grown for us but we can still start practicing even more efficient ways of culturing certain foods. We can start learning new farming techniques from Farming Aquaponics which can further greatly reduce the amount of water being used for these tasks. Aquaponics combines agriculture and aquaculture by using the excretion of fish for the nutrients of certain plants being grown, which in turn cleans the water for the fish. Creating such an ecosystem that recycles the water is ideal for our cause.

Changes in Activities of Metal Industries

Water is used in almost every other industrial activity related to metals, be it mining, metal bending, alloy manufacture and the list goes on. All of these industries use water because it is the cheapest cooling agent and the most readily available raw material that they use for different things. If only these industries switched to other resources there would be a drastic decline in water consumption. The cost of manufacture for these industries might go up but the problem of water scarcity will be on the decline.

Rain-water Harvesting

A lot of research is being done on creating easy and efficient ways of rain-water harvesting. We all love to go out and soak ourselves in the rain from time to time but we hardly ever think of conserving all that water precipitating from the sky. All the water falling to the ground can be directed to refill the aquifers by using various methods. We can even collect the rainwater on our rooftops by simply directing it into a tank. Though it is easier said than done, as some things have to be taken care of like avoiding the first flush and filtration. The water from the first rainfall is usually avoided as it is considered impure due to scientifically proven reasons. Filtration is always required as impurities do sometimes mix while collecting rainwater.

Conservation of drinking water is not a very difficult task. We just need to start realizing its importance and we need to start working towards it. With all the development in science and technology, saving water would be the least challenging task that we as a human race would face.
