How to Have a Low Maintenance Garden All Year Round

For most homeowners, having a nice garden to relax in is a must. But, for many, the time it takes to maintain simply doesn’t work with their schedules. De-weeding, watering, pruning and mowing lawns takes up a lot of time. So what’s the solution?

A low maintenance garden. That’s the dream, right? Aside from hiring a gardener to tend to your backyard, having a garden that’s low maintenance is your answer. So, here are some great tips on how you can achieve just that.

Plant evergreens

Watering plants, picking up dead leaves and replanting those that have died is arguably one of the most time consuming parts of gardening. But, you want plants in your garden, right? Consider planting evergreen plants in your garden so that no matter what time of the year it is, your garden will still look pretty. Sure, you might have to trim them back from time to time, but they are much less maintenance than regular plants. Consider different flowered shrubbery to dot around your garden to add lots of color and variety.

Get the professionals in

While you don’t want to pay a gardener to come and tend your garden for you, you might want to consider getting the professionals in now to help make your garden low maintenance. They can help come up with a landscape design that will fit your needs and aesthetic too. Talk to them about wanting a low maintenance garden and they’ll be able to suggest things like paving or stoned areas that will dramatically lower the amount of effort you have to put into your garden.

Switch to fencing

Privacy is a must in your garden, especially if you enjoy sunbathing and entertaining friends and family. The last thing you want is people gazing into your garden when you’re trying to relax! Hedges are a great way of solving this problem, but they do require a lot of upkeep if you want to keep them looking nice. Instead, consider wooden fencing around your garden (or at least where you spend most of your time outside) so that you get the privacy you need. You can always add hanging baskets onto your fences for a pop of color.

Remove grassy areas

Having grass in the garden is great, but mowing it and picking weeds is oh-so time consuming. Removing your grassy areas doesn’t mean you have to miss out on greenery in your garden either! You could simply replace it with turf to give the look and feel of grass – just without the maintenance! Alternatively, you could turn it into patio areas instead!

Keep it minimalistic

Finally, garden maintenance also extends to keeping furniture looking great. Keep any furniture in your garden as minimalistic and easy to maintain as possible by using hardwearing materials like treated wood, stone or brick. If you’re feeling creative, you could even build your own garden furniture! The less that you’ve got in your garden to take care of will give you much more time in the long run!
