Most of us have flipped through a gardening magazine or two, stumbled upon a gardening blog, or some of us really want a nice garden. What we all have in common is the wish to have a beautiful garden we can hang out in or make parties. Garden envy is normal, but with a few tips, it’s very easy to have a garden or lawn you have always dreamed about. Watering, planting and keeping up with your lawn can seem like a big task, so below we will advise you how to properly maintain your lawn.
Lawn Maintenance
You want a beautiful lawn and are wondering how to get it. It’s actually not that difficult, it only takes a little bit of effort and devoted time. Over time your lawn will look as wonderful as on the cover of a magazine. There are a couple of things you can do. Removing weeds and unwanted grass is the first thing you should do.
Remove the weeds completely with the roots, so you can make sure that they won’t grow again. After that, you can detach your lawn. Detaching the top layer of your soil will help it receive more nutrients and grow better. You can do it with a rake, lightly in spring and heavier in the fall.
Planting Seeds and Trees
When considering what and when to plant your trees and seeds for flowers, your location determines the choice. Cool-season grass is perfect if you live in northern parts where it is colder and temperatures go below zero. If you live in warmer climates where it gets really hot, warm-season grass is perfect.
When planting trees, consider how tall it will grow, and where the shade will be. Trees start small, so when it grows it can easily hit the roof or get in the way, so think ahead what the tree will look like in some spots. If the shade is going to take up a lot of ground space, think about moving your other plants like flowers somewhere that get more sunlight. Consider hiring The Local Tree Experts to remove unnecessary trees or trimming old ones to open sunny spaces.
Fertilizing the Lawn
While some lawns can thrive on their own, and make your plants beautiful and healthy, some lawns don’t have as many nutrients in them as they need. Most soils are not able to provide the nutrients through all of the seasons, so adding fertilizer is a must. It helps to promote the growth of leaves and roots, it reduces the growth of weeds and replaces the nutrients that are lost.
You have to consider what type of grass you have, where you live and what season you are fertilizing in. The most effective way is to use granular fertilizer once or twice a year. It releases the fertilizing properties gradually over several months. There is also an option of natural fertilizer, like compost.
Watering the Lawn
Watering is easy and one of the most important things to do to maintain your lawn. How much water you need depends on the type of grass or plants you have. Generally, it’s better to water heavily when needed than to water a little bit more frequently. The grass should be watered as soon as it dries out, and always do it in the morning, while it still isn’t so hot outside.
The grass will have more time to soak up the water. If you have a big garden and it’s taking you a lot of time do finish everything, consider looking into garden watering accessories. They will help you finish the job easier and faster.
Mowing the Lawn
Mowing the lawn is essential, and it helps promote the growth and healthiness of your yard. It increases the density of the lawn, which decreases weeds. Not every grass is mowed the same, so it depends on the type of grass you have.
Every type has a recommended height. When mowing, never do more than 1/3 of the grass height. If you mow closely to the ground, your grass can become unhealthy and the lawn gets brown colour. The grass can also have increased vulnerability to pests and diseases, and the surface can not produce food.
Avoid mowing in the highest heat time in the day, and always mown the grass when it’s dry. When you are mowing, leave the clipping behind the mower, and don’t take them off unless they form clumps. If you leave them, they return nutrients to the ground.
Whether you are a novice gardener or you have had a garden for a long time, it’s easy to overlook some things in the maintenance process. Inspect your lawn more closely, and you can see what it needs. If the grass doesn’t jump back up when you step on it, it needs watering. Take care of your lawn by fertilizing it, removing weeds, and raking it, and it should easily become one of the most rewarding projects you have started.
