For many people, their bathroom is an oasis of calm where they can escape from the world and clear their head. Without proper maintenance, however, bathrooms can cause a lot of headaches.
Fortunately, it only takes a little bit of regular maintenance to make sure that your bathroom is always ready when you want to relax. Here are the most important things you need to keep on top of.
Don’t give mould the chance to form
Bathrooms are frequently damp, dark and warm. These are the ideal conditions for mould which will continuously grow and spread once it has appeared.
It is bad to breathe it in, and it can also damage the surfaces where it forms. Basically, it is a lot easier to combat it early or prevent it altogether. So, what can you do?
Keep your bathroom ventilated – If you have an extractor fan, use it while showering or bathing and let it run for 10 minutes or so after you have finished. Alternatively, open a window.
Keep bathroom fabrics clean – Wash towels often. Bath mats too. Let them dry out properly after use and do the same if you have a carpeted bathroom too.
Check for mould regularly – Make it a habit to check for mould, and remember to look in less visible areas like under the sink and on the shower curtain.
Check for leaks and fix them quickly
Leaks waste water and can result in serious property damage. They also tend to get worse the longer they are allowed to happen. If you do not act quickly, bathroom leakage repair can become very expensive.
For this reason, it is essential to fix leaks as soon as possible. Check your pipes and appliances regularly, even if there are no puddles on the floor. Even a slow trickle can waste many litres of water each day.
Remove limescale
Unlike mould, limescale is not harmful to people. But let it build up and it will be hard to remove and unsightly. It can also stop your bathroom fixtures from working properly.
Using a squeegee to wipe down your shower or bath, and a glass shower screen if you have one, will help stave off limescale buildup and keep your bathroom looking luxurious. If a serious amount has built up, then a little bleach and some vinegar should help to break it down.
Scrub between your bathroom tiles
The light-coloured material in between your bathroom tiles is grout. Surprisingly, given its purpose, this material is porous and that means that water can get into it. Over time, this can cause it to become dark and mouldy. It can also crack and start to let moisture seep into the walls of your house.
This can easily be avoided by giving it a scrub every other week with an old toothbrush. Dip it in some water and baking soda, and rinse the grout with water once you are done.
A bathroom can be a sanctuary for relaxation, but damp and mould can quickly turn any room into a health hazard. Keep on top of things by regularly using the tips above, and they will help ensure that yours is always in good shape.
