6 Strategies To Tackle Extreme Sweating In The Workplace

With summer in full swing, the temperature in offices everywhere is rising and there doesn’t seem to be any respite… It’s hard enough to concentrate in this heat when you feel like you’re going to melt, but if you’re someone who suffers from extreme sweating, then your condition can make going to work unbearable.

Aside from the physical discomfort, sweating can also impact your mental wellbeing — making you feel embarrassed, self-conscious and nervous in the workplace, as well as affecting your concentration and perfection. 2. Keep Cool With Fans

God bless whoever invented the modern-day electric fan. If you aren’t lucky enough to have air-con installed in your place of work, then an electric fan is the next best thing — and your new best friend.

Invest in a decent fan for your desk and keep it pointed at your body while you work — the calming breeze will help to bring down your body temperature, as well as evaporating sweat quickly before it stains (which will also cool down your skin too).

4. Avoid Certain Foods that Make Sweating Worse

Our next strategy for tackling extreme sweating in the workplace? Sorting out that diet.

We don’t mean swapping your normal food routine for a non-wheat, non-dairy, non-meat, cucumber-based diet; just making a few changes to reduce your internal body temperature.

For example, spicy food naturally gets you hot under the collar and makes you sweat more. Meat can also trigger extreme sweating (you’ve heard of the “meat sweats,” right?)

That’s right; if you want to stop sweating at work, you’re going to need to stop visiting your favorite lunchtime burrito joint (or at least cut down on the chili and jalapenos) and you should definitely avoid packing your leftover curry for lunch.

Instead, how about introducing calcium-rich foods into your diet, like cheese and dairy? Calcium helps to regulate body temperature and suppress sweating. Add lots of water to your diet too, to keep you cool and hydrated. Sorted.

5. Double up on Hidden Protection

If you feel like you need extra protection from sweat stains and odors, then you can always invest in some hidden protection.

These days, there are all sorts of moisture-wicking, sweatproof undershirts available that have been specifically designed to tackle extreme sweating. Many contain built-in underarm panels to prevent stains and absorb odor to avoid any embarassing situations.

You can also buy shoe inserts which will absorb sweat and odor, and stop your feet from causing you to feel uncomfortable.

6. Try Medical Treatments

If you’ve tried all of the above sweating strategies, and you feel like you’re not getting anywhere, you can always try medical treatments too.

Speak to your doctor, but he or she may suggest one of the following medical treatments to help tack extreme sweating:

  • Over-the-counter or prescription antiperspirants. These generally contain aluminum chloride, which can be more effective than normal antiperspirants
  • Prescription creams. These can help to treat excessive sweating on your face and head.
  • Botox. This is injected, which temporarily blocks the nerves that cause sweating. Effects last six to 12 months.
  • Laser treatment. This can target and kill the underarm sweat glands.
  • Surgery. Surgery can be used to remove the sweat glands completely.
