Skinimalism – Biggest Skincare Trend

Skinimalism or skin minimalism is the new beauty trend that refers to a natural and glowing look. According to Pinterest’s Trend Predictions Report, skinimalism describes the stripping back of our skincare and make-up routines in favour of a more minimalist approach.

 What is skinimalism?

Skinimalism is not your average beauty trend. It isn’t about creating angle-perfect, airbrushed, or retouched skin, in fact, it is about enhancing a glowing and healthy-looking natural complexion. It’s about paring down, taking a few steps back, harnessing the power of multitasking products, and ultimately committing to a more sustainable and often cheaper beauty routine approaches.

Dr Rozina Ali, certified the plastic surgeon of 2021, has been an advocate of the “less is enough” concept for years. “The best ‘anti-ageing’ strategy is to look after yourself. I am firm of the ‘little and often’ school of aesthetics”. Although having an aesthetically curated product lineup is a growing trend right now, “less is more” has always been the better approach for your actual skin.

Why is this trend becoming more and more popular?

Over the last 18 months, due to the pandemic worldwide background and lockdowns,  job insecurity became a reality for so many, and so did frugality. DIY, budget-friendly skincare treatments have become more popular than ever, with our go-to beauty magazines and websites providing easy beauty solutions straight from the kitchen. Thus, while the time we invest in taking care of our skin may remain high, our spending on multiple, single-benefit products is a luxury that savvy beauty shoppers may no longer want to prioritize.

Many people don’t realize that the products we use can cause the skin to get itself into a vicious cycle. Complicated regimens can damage the skin and disrupt its pH balance, especially when you are using products that are not suitable for your skin type and needs.

Also, skincare minimalism is a wonderful and effective sustainability method. As skinimalism encourages buying fewer products, the downfall of packaging and product waste will decrease. And we all know how much our environment needs us to live more sustainably.

How do you build a minimalist skincare routine?

Becoming a skincare minimalist doesn’t mean touching your face again. You can use fewer products or formulas depending on your skincare needs.

    1. You’ll need a cleanser to wash off the dirt, excess oil, dead skin cells, and environmental impurities that end up on your face naturally throughout the day.
    2. Moisturizer will help keep the skin’s protective barrier functioning properly and your skin feeling smooth and soft. And arguably the most important element.
    3. Sunscreen, preferably SPF 50+, to help prevent skin ageing, skin damage, and skin cancer and you’re ready for the day. 🙂

Let’s say, one skinimalist routine might involve using a gentle, exfoliating cleanser that contains AHA or BHA, followed by a targeted treatment to address your specific skin needs; for instance, you might apply toner with salicylic acid to clear up acne and blackheads. Treatment is followed by protection, in the form of a moisturizer and sunscreen.

When it comes to beauty, it’s important to remember that what we think are our flaws are sometimes what others might consider as our most redeeming quality. So regardless of how you want to apply the skinimalism trend to your skincare, at the end of the day, having healthy skin is what really matters.
