“You need to set your goals and strive for them.”

Aleksandra, can you please tell us a bit more about yourself and how did you discover a love for makeup? My name is Aleksandra but I am known online as Olla Mi. I am a girl from Poland. Art was always a part of my life and I loved drawing and painting. I love traveling and getting to know new places, creating projects and arranging interiors. My career in make-up began after I graduated. I decided (at sister’s suggestion) to complete a make-up course and then I fell in love with it. It is surely creative activity that gives me an opportunity to develop myself. I try to be the best version of myself in my professional and everyday life.

What do you like most about being a makeup artist? The opportunity to cooperate with talented people and continuous development that motivates me.

How has makeup artistry changed or influenced you as a person? As make-up artist I became mores confident person. It is easier to establish new relationships, I was rather shy person before. Usually I work with new-known people so I must be cheerful.

What has been the biggest challenge of your career? The biggest challenge was to change my lifestyle, redefine what is most important to me, and relocate. At the beginning of my adventure with makeup I traveled a lot, which entails lack of time for relatives. I had to find my own style and choose the path I wanted my career to go through.

When painting a face, you begin with a blank canvas. What inspires you? What famous artists have influenced you, and how? A lot of things inspire me, like women’s beauty, colors, nature but also people with passions. Inspiration is very important to artists. I admire people with passion who can uniquely encourage to make efforts and to develop interest. I am a person that observes everything that is around me. There are a lot great artists who inspire me like Tom Pecheux. His make-ups are soft and nice to watch. Also Pat McGrath who has unique style and is undoubtedly very creative person.

What are your favorite Spring/Summer 2017 beauty trends? I love colors, their intensity in forthcoming season but also simplicity in realization. Make-up is fun and face is like canvas. Face’s fine shine of a bit of pink and gold lipgloss is great daily makeup and still not boring.

In your opinion, does everyone look better with makeup? Definitely not. Makeup has to accent our beauty but not change it. We have to love ourselves. Makeup has to be our pleasure not obligation. I love madness and intensity but not in everyday life. During photo session I have a lot of freedom of action, but in everyday make-up I prefer the minimum and simplicity.

Can you tell us about a memorable moment you had while doing makeup? Honestly it’s hard to just distinguish only one opportunity, always an memorable moment is any makeup that has expanded my portfolio, also the smile of the women who have my makeup.

Where do you pull your inspiration from to help you with your work? I treat each make-up session individually. I watch sometimes those who are well-known in the field of make-up. The most inspiring is model’s beauty for whom I make a make-up. I try to bring out the best even if make-up borders on esthetics.

What is one makeup trend you enjoy right now, one trend that you do not like so much? I like makeup that is soft, shine and simple. Makeup that fits into with beauty and personality. I do not like over-complication.

Can you name some products and tools you could not live without while working on set?  My favorite product is the highlighter MAC mineralize soft and gentle, which is often used in my work. This product gives freshness even with strong makeup. I also like to apply Embryolisse Lait Crème Concentré because it has an amazing hydrating and soothing properties.

How do you get a “natural” look when you’re doing your makeup? Any tips/tricks? Natural makeup is very difficult to do. My secret get a natural look is to employ creamy products. Creamy, fulgent, soft pink that I dab on cheeks and lips gives a lot of freshness even for strained skin. Replenishment is powder that reflects light which I apply only on T-zone.

What is the secret to seamless foundation application? I always use MAC fix plus for the beauty blender then the foundation is better connected to the skin.

From your point of view, what are common mistakes you see women make on their makeup? The most common mistake women make is too dark foundation and excessive amount of products used in face. I think it is because of willingness with striving for perfection in look. Strong makeup does not seem anything bad but women forget how they are beautiful naturally.

Tell us, why is having a makeup artist essential to a photographer? What can you provide to help images stand out? We need each other. Good photograph arises from efforts of group of people. Makeup artist is one of them. During beauty sessions makeup is very important and must be consistent with trends in upcoming season. On the other hand during fashion sessions makeup is a part of the whole look. However it should fit into entirety. At session, the teamwork must cooperate close together and work hand in hand.

What do you wish people would understand about working in the fashion industry? This is a creative work that is often a passion. This work involves continuous search for trends and ideas. At the same time it is ruthless for young people, because more and more people are interested in the fashion world, and not for everyone is the place. You need to set your goals and strive for them.

Who are some people that have inspired you throughout your career? Definitely my sister is a great motivator and always supports me in pursuit of the goal. Also, I can count on friends who are great motivation to new projects. Many things inspire me, what surrounds us, people, places. I’m a person who watches everything around. Colors are always a good inspiration, especially for spring and summer trends. Inspiration is very important for artists. I am also inspired by other artists who are very successful in their fields.

What role does social media play in your makeup business? Do you feel it helped your career? Today, social media is the driving force behind many industries, and makeup is included in this group. I think this gives the chance for many young artists to emerge on the job market. For a long time I was not convinced of such a form of promotion, but at the urging of friends I also decided to show my work in social media. All my new pictures show in social media, it is very nice when someone appreciates my hard work.

Is there anything you’d like to do in the future? Someone you’d like to work with or something you’d like to accomplish? I would like to develop as a makeup artist and create new work. I try to achieve my goals and work hard all the time. I am always open to new challenges. I want to work with people who motivate me to think.

How does a typical day in the life of Olla look like? Everyday is different, I try to approach each order individually. Definitely in my day there are not enough hours for me. When I have a free day I like to sleep a little longer. Then I have time to read and meet with my friends.

What superpower do you wish you had? Why? A superpower of giving happiness. Positive energy and happy life are the most important when you want to develop your passion.

One thing that bugs you about humans is that…? Bugs have a remarkably short memory span than humans.

Tell us one thing about yourself people might find surprising. I am a sleepyhead, I always have trouble waking up in the morning (laughing).

Thank you, Olla.
