Interview with Makeup Artist Alisha Ehret

“Makeup is a special kind of art.” – Makeup Artist Alisha Ehret

2016 #13 Jan VOL I MUA Ehret WEB cutAlisha, how did your career begin in the world of beauty? I’ve started my career in 2008. I’ve done an education as a Hairdresser in Mannheim, Germany. There was a big makeup area. I fall in love. In 2013 I started being a makeup artist and hairstylist as a Trainee in Frankfurt am Main at Famous Face Academy for one year. Now I’m based in Mannheim, Germany and travel all over the world.

Why is having a MUA essential to a photographer? What can you provide to help a photographer’s images stand out? A work of a makeup artist helps a lot for a photographer. The better makeup the less a photographer has to photoshop. I can give the photographer my point of view. Maybe come up with some other creative and special shoot ideas.

Why is shooting for camera and lights, different then everyday makeup? The makeup always must be stronger in front of a camera! The lightening and the camera are taking away a lot of color from the makeup. It doesn’t look as heavy on camera as it actually is. The same is for live walks on fashion shows. People wouldn’t even see makeup if it wouldn’t be heavier.

What area of the makeup industry is your favorite and why? My favourite makeup area is fashion. I love glamour and strait looks. I like nice clothing and the statement which they are trying to tell with their fashion.

You regularly work with some of the most beautiful women. How does that shape your definition of beauty? Does everyone look better with make-up? I underline the beauty of the girls with the help of makeup. I wouldn’t say that they look better with it. Some of them barely need any makeup to look the best. I just love to see how makeup can change the look of the models.

What do you love most about doing makeup? I love how it can change a Person. Makeup is a special kind of art. Even with just the tiniest bit of cosmetics, a person can look completely different. That is what fascinates me every single time again.

Can you tell us about a memorable moment you had while doing makeup? When I had my first big job and done makeup for celebrities from Germany, London and New York. My highlight will be always the after-show parties where you can see that all the celebrities are normal humans like we are.

You have an impressive portfolio. How would you describe your signature look and what is it about your style that sets you apart from other makeup artists? What kinds of looks do you prefer doing? I prefer minimalistic make up looks which show strength and express itself. You can see that in nearly all of my work, I am known for a strong and clean makeup.

Alisha, what is the most exciting or challenging opportunity you have had as a freelance artist? What’s the project you are most proud of? My first fashionweek of course and with that my career overseas. I was the happiest person on earth when I saw my work in a magazine for the first time.

How do you keep up with all the new trends and styles? Where do you find your inspiration for your makeup looks? It doesn’t matter where I am, I always will look for new trends and styles. It doesn’t matter if I am just shopping or having a coffee with friends. Also I find a lot of inspiration in magazines, in the streets or internet. It doesn’t matter where I am I always get new ideas and I try to transform them into beautiful, stunning looks.

What are your tips for maintaining a youthful appearance? My tips for a youthful appearance are a lot of sleep, the right beauty/skin products, natural make ups and dont put yourself under too much pressure.

In your opinion, what are common mistakes you see women make on their makeup? A lot of women are wearing too much or wrong shade of makeup. There is nothing worse than clogged pores or neckline with a wrong foundation shade.

Can you name some of your favorite hair and makeup products to use? What three makeup items should no woman leave home without? What is in your personal make-up bag? I am a big fan of Mac Cosmetics and Anastasia Beverly Hills. Honestly, I can’t decide which is my favorite Mac product. I love their foundations (studio Fix), their lipsticks and highlighter ( Soft and Gentle). From Anastasia Beverly Hills I really like their Contourkit, the liquid lipsticks and of course their Brow Pomade. The most important beauty products which I always would take with me are facepowder, brow pencil and lipstick. I always keep those beauty products in my bag. My hair products are changing constantly depends on my color and hairstyle.

What’s the best advice you as a hair and makeup artist have ever gotten? The best advice was to never give up and believe in what you do.

Where can we see more of your works and get connected with you? You can view my work on Facebook (Alisha Ehret Hair & Make-up Artist) and Instagram. I will launch my Website soon.

What would you say is the most challenging part of hair and makeup business? To be outstanding from other makeup artists and to never give up. A lot of makeup artists can’t represent their own opinion and the amount of competitors doesn’t make it a lot easier.

What do you think are some of the keys to being a successful makeup artist? Purposefulness, ambition, individuality, clean and good work

Thank you, Alisha.
