“The one and only style habit you should have, is wearing what you want and feeling good while doing it. “
First of all, can you tell us a bit about yourself and brand? What got you interested in designing lingerie? How did the idea and concept of Masha Schubbach brand come to fruition? I am Masha, a 21 years old fashion design student living near Frankfurt. Since I can imagine my dream is becoming a fashion designer, therefor I started studying fashion design in 2013 at Modefachschule Sigamringen (a German fashion design school). With participating in my first competition, called “Mare di Moda, The Link Award” I collected very important experiences. I had a huge fashion show in Cannes and Florence as well as a stand on a lingerie and swimwear fair. This was the beginning of my career and the time I founded my own label, “Masha Schubbach”.
What is the message behind your brand? What makes your brand different from other lingerie brands? My brand is totally me – every piece is created specially for my client. I am designing with all my passion and love, to make my designs unique. Compared to other brands mine is very personal, I keep in touch with each of my clients. Often we are working on special designs, made by measure and in compliance with their wishes.
Who is the woman you are generally designing for? In my opinion fashion is for everyone – I haven’t got a special target market.
Aesthetically speaking, what inspired your debut collection? The beauty of a woman’s body, the uniqueness, the curves and different personalities.
Can you please briefly describe your design process from mood boards to picking out fabrics to production. Normally a designer starts with collecting inspiration, preparing mood boards and scribbles. Afterwards he works on technical drawings the rest is done by pattern makers and seamstresses. I my case: I am working on my own and preparing the collections by myself. When an idea runs through my mind I normally start working immediately. To tell the truth, it’s like having an idea and testing everything. I don’t have a special “working scheme”.
When you create something, what goes through your mind? I don’t know.. what do you think about while writing this interview? haha
In your opinion, why is lingerie so important to the modern woman? Beautiful lingerie is a reward for yourself – the moment you’re wearing it is indescribable, feeling much more confidant, receiving a better posture and self esteem. I think it is what is worn underneath that really inspires a woman to feel good in her clothes – that inner, secret beauty.
What three style habits should every woman adopt? The one and only style habit you should have, is wearing what you want and feeling good while doing it.
If Masha Schubbach could have any celebrity spokes model, who would it be? Why? Cara Delevingne, because she is so distinctive in her character and style.
As a fashion stylist what trends are you loving right now? I am not looking that much after trends, for me fashion is a form of expression spirit – reflected a person’s character / fashion as new form of communication in the 21st century. My personal trend are the designs of my favorite brand named Kokon to Zai (KTZ). Their design insane designs and would love to own some of their pieces.
What was one of your most favorite shoot or project that you worked on recently? My favorites were definitely all the shootings with Nicola Rehbein, his talent is indescribable, I love every single picture he takes.
What is your unique approach to fashion shows? How is magic created? I don’t like to set my models under a huge pressure.. our “secret” is to have fun, the whole team is drinking something before the show, we want to have a good time on the catwalk and to make the best of the show 🙂
What has been the most rewarding moment of your career, so far? Looking retrospectively at my career, the most exciting moments were my first- fashion show, fair, fitting and shooting in Cannes.
I was super nervous and did not know how to handle everything, I remember my hands super sweaty, my face turning red and me totally shaking. (haha :D)
From your experience what is the hardest thing about being your own boss? It’s the freedom – you don’t have special working times, this induces to having way to looooong breaks and doing unimportant things at first.
Could you tell us about something completely extravagant you have had to do for your job? Diving during an underwater shooting, to help the model with her dress and posing. I never thought this would be part of my job.
What are your plans for the nearest future? I would love to travel a lot after my studies, to collect experiences abroad, to find myself and new ideas. My dream is to get to know people from all over the world, to work with new labels, models and photographers.
How important is social media in your business? Very important! Without social media I would not have had any of my photo shootings and shows. For me Facebook, Instagram and co. are perfect platforms to show of my work and to share my ideas with the whole world.
