Interview with French Model Romy Bondy

“I like it, I feel free and it brings a lot of fun. Everything is possible.” – model Romy Bondy

interview with model romy bondyRomy, could you briefly introduce yourself and tell us a little bit on how did you get into modeling world? My name is Romy. I am French and I am 21 years old. I started modeling 3 years ago. I am in front of the lens since I was very small as my mom had a lot of fun to take pictures with different outfits, wigs at home. I liked it. I am inspired and motived by passion, art and history.

I did a shoot for the fun at first, and then I needed a book to apply for castings, so I started and I liked it. Modeling is a bit of a revenge for me, not everyone has always been sweet to school with me.

What do you love most about being a model? What I like about modeling is that we do things that we would not normally do, creative, artistic, very original things (it depends on the themes). For example, taking pictures with an insect in the mouth, a deer skull placed on the face, or being completely covered with body-painting. I can be who I want, thanks to a stylization, hairstyling, and different makeups. I like it, I feel free and it brings a lot of fun. Everything is possible. I love it, when I pose for creative shoots, it is very rewarding. It goes well with my personality, as I like what is weird, strange, but I can be simpler: romantic, sweet and lovely.

How would you describe yourself as model in three words? Well, I would say motivated, innovative and seeking new challenges.

Is there anything you would change about the modeling industry if you could? What I would change if I could it is the size of the models to go into agency. Unfortunately for me I miss a few centimeters, 3 or 4 centimeters, and I am not accepted on the shows, in agency, yet it’s just a matter of a very few inches. I find that a person should not be judged on his or her size only. The restrictions of size even if you work hard, you are motivated, you have the wishes, it is not always simple. The criteria is the same and it does not change, they became even worse, some agencies require 180cm now!

What do you think are the most difficult aspects of being a model? I would say that we are often judged by others, the people who see our photos judge us by the photo when they do not know us. Otherwise, I do not see many other negative points. Sometimes it takes sacrifices to work hard, under conditions not always easy as in forest, with rain…

Something that most people don’t know about models is that we… are women or men first before being model, modeling is a work and it needs experience.

Who are some models you look up to and adore? There are several that I like, first, Cara Delevingne. She is different, as she says herself ‘I love naturalness and simplicity’ or ‘Do not worry, be happy, accept your oddity …’’ That is why I appreciate for what she does, the image that she sends back from her, she amuses herself and does not always take herself seriously; it is not artificial, as one can see in another person.

Audrey Hepburn for its natural beauty, class, elegance, style, investment in humanitarianism, glamor…

Lady Gaga for her personality, her creativity, her madness.

Dita Von Teese for her glamor, her side pin up. I love her style.

I am also interested in women with classical beauty and paintings of painters such as Frank Dicksee’s Portrait of Elsa, given that I love art.

Who is your number one style icon? Alexander McQueen is number one for me. It is one of the most creative in fashion design and show. It is impressive what he has done, I love his works enormously.

I really like everything what is creative, artistic. It’s like watching some high end show or well done fantastic movies; It is amazing and overflowing. You are sometimes transported into another world.

What from your point of view makes the shoot successful? A motivated team who are of the same opinion as you and who go in the same direction, good ideas, and interesting place. And when everyone is proud of the result at the end.

You have an amazing portfolio and you have worked on so many projects as a model. What are your favorite genres & styles of modeling? I like working on original themes, with a make up and an original hairstyle, sophisticated design sometimes extravagant, things we would not wear in everyday life. Creative show is very rewarding but I can be simple, I also like what is romantic, sweet.

interview with model romy bondyWhat kind of photo-sessions do you find to be the most challenging and why? The sessions with big hairstyles that are long and painful to wear.

Otherwise body-painting in general. It takes time. For the avatar shooting that was published in one of your previous issues, it took about 3 hours to be covered in blue, but it was a very nice session with a good team.

Sessions in the mountains. A year ago I did a shooting with photographer Julien Dumas for his series ” Lost in ”. I had to stand in the snow without shoes in the middle of February, in nightshirts. It lasted 8 minutes to 10 minutes, I have got a cough but fortunately I was not sick, but it was really cold. Also in the same week I also did a shoot with Marc Lamey on a bridge. There was a lot of wind and finally we could not shoot and left with no photo. We were so cold!

Romy, what has been your most awkward/crazy moment of your modeling career? I will say that there is not one.

For the Eiffel Tower pictures by Marc Lamey, we started very early in the morning, at 5am. Also it was very cold when I did photos with smoke in a wood….

People were surprised to see us in a park or in other public place they must have found us very strange because, for example, for some images we used a fan to blow my hair and have a flying hair effect in images.

Would you have any tips for non-models on how to look good in front of the camera? To be able to learn, also it is necessary to train yourself to pose in front of the other people, for example, your friends and to know different poses, when you don’t have a mirror in front of you.

To become a good model and to progress it is necessary to make several photographic sessions, and listen to the criticisms of the photographers and be open, listen and be able to progress as much as possible. It takes patience, hard work to get to something good and gain experience. It is like learning to swim, playing tennis, step by step, the more you practice the better you are, the more you will pose the more you will progress with poses, attitudes, face expressions. Being a photo model is like being in theater and playing a different role for every shoot.

What is your favorite / most memorable direction a photographer has ever given to you? That I was one of his few models who progressed fast, it was surprising. Another person for whom I was modeling told me that I have beautiful eyes and beautiful face resembling a female child, it is called classic beauty/face.

Do you have any beauty / skin care tips or tricks to look fresh and rested for early morning photo shoots? So, I hydrate as much as possible by drinking water, use vitamins, ideally fruit juices. I apply cold water to my skin, use a cleanser that remove pores and dead skin, and finally I use a day cream called “Avene”. I use good skin products, generally pharmaceutical products or that are tender my skin and do not do any harm. At the moment, I use makeup brand Bare Minerals, products of this brand hydrates my skin well. In general, if you want your makeup sit well and look good on you must have your skin well hydrated.

What do you think “beauty” is? How would you define it? I think Audrey Hepburn’s quote about the beauty “The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure she displays or the way she combs her hair. The beauty of a woman is seen in her eyes because they are the door of her heart, the place where her love resides” defines well what real beauty is.

I would also add, that a person must be beautiful inside too, outside beauty must cohere with inside beauty, one without the other does not works.

What is something you haven’t achieved but hope to achieve in the future? A next shoot better than the others? More creative, more crazy? Would love to belong to a modeling agency some day, I was refused because of my height.

Making the cover of a novel would be an honor. I love literature so for me it would be an accomplishment.

In personal project, it would be to going around the world. I love discovering new places, new cultures. Each person should discover the world, and leave the comfort zone, we only have one life and I think we should live it entirely. I made the choice to enjoy my life and my youth now.

Do people treat you or act any differently since you’ve become a model? Not specifically. I ask to be treated normally I am just a photo model and I am not a superstar. I am pretty simple and smiling person.

What are your favorite things to do in your free time? Do you have other ambitions outside of modeling? I listen to a lot of music of different kind, that makes me happy and calms and inspires me. I travel regularly, I love it. I like to walk in nature, this makes me think and give me quite creative ideas. I dedicate time to my friends, and a lots of love to the people who deserve it.

For now I am focusing on modeling, otherwise I think I am moving myself towards tourism.

I would like to do humanitarian work. Would love to help animals, help poor people in need. Helping humanity, I would like to serve something in helping others.

One thing that bugs you about humans is that…? Violence from human to human and human to animal.

Like the song ‘Imagine’ by John Lennon I will love a world without violence, without war, a happy world.

I wished massacre of animals diminished. We need to stop that cruelty towards animals. Stopping animal slaughter is an important cause for me, 3 years ago I had a file on the massacres towards animals, killing dolphins in the Feroe Islands. Each year thousands of dolphins are killed there.

Tell us one thing about yourself people might find surprising. Before doing modeling, I competed in swimming and running at a high level and now I have focused on modeling. Also my family and I have a business of patterned pastry rolls, I help them, and I sell on pastry shops and Christmas markets.

 Thank you, Romy.
